Climate change will cause an imminent change in human life on Earth. However, if many experts believe that it is necessarily caused by a rise in temperature, James Hamsen – former NASA climate chief – excludes this reflection by advancing another one : the rise of the sea level rise and the massive migration are the real cause of this change who can make the world “ungovernable.”
The rise of sea level
In an interview with New York Magazine, former NASA climate chief James Hansen confirmed that sea levels will increase significantly in the years to come. He explains: “I don’t think we’re going to get four or five degrees this century, because we get a cooling effect from the melting ice. But the biggest effect will be that melting ice ”
For Hansen, the main cause of sea-level rise would be the continued use of fossil fuels, which could increase this threshold by several meters in a period of 50 to 150 years. This reflection was the subject of an article published last year in the same magazine. Given that more than half of the world’s population lives on the coasts, this could seriously affect land management.
At a time when 90% of Americans have no idea about the scientific consensus around global warming, scientists continue to struggle over the influence of climate change on the future of man on earth. For James Hansen, this future is further complicated by the “inevitable mass migrations and their economic consequences” which can make the world “ungovernable”. For him, this is the main challenge, because without a reaction from institutions and populations around the world, climate change will cause many ravages on our planet
