Happiness can be defined by the feeling of well-being that everybody would want.
It is associated with the release of different types of hormones from the brain like cortisol, dopamine, endorphine and serotonine which our brain produces from exercising, eating healthy food; walking under the sun, having sex, success and smiling…These hormones are what make us feel happiness.
Happiness can’t have a specific definition but rather approximate descriptions that vary from one to another therefore happiness is very relative. Although it is very connected to well-being in general, success has a great contribution to the establishment of happiness. Academic success represents a huge portion of general success according to nowadays standards regarding that usually academic success leads to career success. Academic success depends greatly on multiple factors. There is several evidence relate success to environments in which the person has grown on ultimately social and economic background, happiness, marriage, and family. Nothing is for sure as great leaders have risen out from scratch and lots of unfortunate people came out of outstanding background. In general, academic success depends greatly on multiple factors.
Using the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States, The study approaches an evaluation of what relays happiness to multiple forms of success.
The study shows that many indicators of success are heritable. Genes play a big role in establishing academic success in a way that there is a relationship between genetic endowments and happiness. Yet the study suggests that the genetics have different influence depending on complex ways of selection. The study suggests that the patterns of interactions between genes, environment and family upbringing methods might define the state of well-being (Jason Schnittker #1).
Physical achievements in school, work, and income that represent success identifiers by society contribute to greater happiness (Mirowsky and Ross).
Although money can’t buy happiness, a study suggests that the Perfect Salary for Happiness is $75,000. The study suggested there are two forms of happiness the first one is day-to-day contentment and the second kind is overall contentment and the $75,000 salary will provide a full day-to-day well-being. Beyond that it only adds possibility to the assets one can possibly buy but will not add any happiness value (Robert Franc).
Love, Friendship, and social connections have great impact on one’s happiness. When one is in love, the brain releases bigger amounts of Oxytocin known as the love hormone. Being with other people in social events is always a happiness source far better than being alone, being around people make us feel happier. Researchers find that people with strong social connections have less stress-related health problems, lower risk of mental illness, and faster recovery from trauma or illness. Happy people spread good energies. “We found a statistical relationship not just between your happiness and your friends’ happiness, but between your happiness and your friends’ friends’ friends’ happiness” (James H. Fowler).
Exercising sports has great effect on ones good mood as while practicing any activity the brain releases hormones like dopamine and endorphin strongly related to well-being feeling. Sports reduce the irritability feelings, anxiety, and stress.
Exercising in group helps building social relationships which helps build social outlets. Group sports are very efficient as it creates social ties. Exercising get oneself into a better physical shape that will make us more confident and more empowered. When the hormones are in the natural levels it will give feelings of well-being on every scale. Food and Dieting has great impact on one’s body and therefore happiness. Eating healthy keeps the body and the hormones in balance. Junk food diet increases the risk of depression as usually junk food contains lots of chemicals that tempers with the hormones and might cause blood and heart problems on the long run. If one is not healthy he surely can’t be happy. Poor eating habits are bad too causing mood swings, fatigue and lack of concentration. Junk food triggers anti-aging process due to the lack of anti-oxidants and therefore wrinkles appear and making the body weaker to fight sun burns and skin wrinkling process (Jim White).
The sun has great effects on one self’s happiness
When the human body is exposed to the sun, the vitamin D which is already made by the body and stored in the skin but the need for vitamin D is to release it. Vitamin D can be found in some foods too and is essential to enhance the absorption of calcium to the bones and thus maintaining strong bones; it helps establishing a good immune system and enhances the growth of muscles. All this benefits are associated with happiness; healthier body means less stress about sicknesses and thus feelings of well-being.
The sunlight is associated with the production of the Endorphin hormone which has a big relationship with feelings of happiness. The lack of vitamin D can really depressing, we can see that in people suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which usually get feelings of sadness, blues, fatigue, depression, and hopelessness especially in the winter; and what doctors advice is to take quantities of vitamin D whether pills or food like milk and fish. Vitamin D is very associated with Endorphins production. “We get about 90 to 95 per cent of our vitamin D from the sun” (Michael Holick #699).
Sex is a need to the human being, and sex is very important to the human body.
Every Orgasm is accompanied with the release of huge amounts of hormones associated with restoring equilibrium and harmony to the brain and the body, Especially Endorphins which are very important. The hormones released from an Orgasm such us dopamine, serotonin and endorphins are the same chemicals found in medications transcribed to treat depression or anxiety. Orgasm releases oxytocine. The oxytocin hormone is also associated with bonding and empathy that is why sex usually makes couples feel closer, bonding might lead to love and when one is in love there is all these love hormones cocktail rushing from the brain to all the body giving feelings of pleasure, empathy and well-being. A study shows that people who have Sex at least 4 times a week make more money. More money more chance to satisfy one’s day-to-day happiness as discussed above.
Sex Help keeping the immune system on an outstanding state.
“Sexually active people take fewer sick days” says a PhD sexual health expert (Yvonne K. Fulbright). People that having more sex have more body defense mechanisms which give them greater ability to fight against germs and viruses. “Students having sex once or twice a week have higher levels of particular antibodies that fight germs compared to other students having less sex (Wilkes University,Pennsylvania). Good health contributes greatly to happiness. Having sex boosts the libido somehow if one would like better live sex he should start having sex. “Having sex will make sex better and will improve your libido” (Lauren Streicher). Sex helps woman the lubrification of their vaginas, elasticity and increases blood flow which will all make sex much better and increase sexual desire and therefore pleasure (Lauren Streicher). It helps woman to control better their bladder because sex is like sports for pelvic floor muscles as while climaxing the contractions of muscles strengths the bladder. Sex helps lowing significantly the blood pressure. Research suggests a link between sex and lower blood pressure “One landmark study found that sexual intercourse specifically (not masturbation) lowered systolic blood pressure”(Joseph J. Pinzone). Sex is a great sport as it counts as exercising, a very pleasurable workout “Sex is a really great form of exercise” (Pinzone).
Sex decreases the risk of heart attacks because it is good for heart as it increases heart rate and beside the fact that it increases testosterone it makes the levels of testosterone and estrogen in equilibrium and this is very important. A good sex life is good for your heart. Besides being a great way to raise your heart rate, sex helps keep your estrogen and testosterone levels in balance. “When either one of those is low you begin to get lots of problems, like osteoporosis and even heart disease” (Pinzone).Sex helps reducing pain. Woman who says they cannot have sex because of a head ache are actually very wrong as after orgasm they will feel as if they had nothing. Orgasm and sexual stimulation releases hormones that increaseself pain tolerance “Orgasm can block pain” (Barry R. Komisaruk). Sex decreases rates of prostate cancer. It doesn’t matter whether with a partner or masturbation, and disregarding the fact that lots of factors affect cancer risk, men ejaculating frequently had fewer chances to get prostate cancer. Sex improves the quality of sleeping and a good sleep is associated with enhanced cerebral functions. After sex one might feel a little light and sleepy. “After orgasm, the hormone prolactin is released, which is responsible for the feelings of relaxation and sleepiness” (Sheenie Ambardar). Exercising fights and helps reset the human clock which takes away insomnia (Jon Henley). “Orgasm in men and women causes the release of oxytocin, one of the brain’s stress-reducing chemicals”(Dr. Paul Zak). Sex loosens stress. Being close to a partner decreases stress and even anxiety. Cuddling make the body release the natural feel-good hormone and sexual arousal activates the brain’s pleasure and reward systems which can empowers the feelings of confidence and happiness (Ambardar).
Happiness is somewhat in our control; Studies show that 50% of a person’s happiness is genetic, 10% is circumstantial, and 40% is based on intentional activity (RebeccaPollard).
Happiness is not a goal but it is a way of living, and as mentioned below we can work our way to happiness by using different techniques and following different practices that will help us get to the state of well-being.
